Background: 15 million babies are born globally before completing 37 weeks of gestation every year. The rate of premature births in India is rising and is presently around 21% of babies and ranks 36th in the world. The knowledge on preemies care gap exists among mothers.
Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of a Mother Steered Essential Preemies Care Bundle on anxiety, knowledge, practice among mothers and the outcome of preemies.
Materials and methods: A Quasi-Experimental study was adopted with a sample size of 240 mothers and their preemies at the Institute of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Chennai. Data was collected using a structured interview and observation checklists. The subjects in the experimental group were administered mother steered essential preemies care bundle along with the hospital routine.
Results: The post test mean differed anxiety, knowledge and practice scores were 15.78, 8.2 and 42.65 respectively. The post test mean differed outcome score of the preemies was high for all outcome variables. This revealed that the experimental group mothers had reduced anxiety score, improved knowledge, practice scores and enhanced outcome score significantly, thus indicating that Mother Steered Essential Preemies Care Bundle was effective.
Conclusion: The study concluded that the mother steered essential preemies care bundle devised by the investigator was an effective interventional strategy in reducing the anxiety of mothers of preemies, enhancing the knowledge, practice of preemies care among mothers that in turn had an impact on the outcome of preemies.
