ABSTRACT

Edible oils are major dietary sources of essential fatty acids and natural antioxidants. The present study aimed to develop and validate a rapid and reliable HPLC method for simultaneous estimation of palmitic acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, and tocopherol in selected branded edible oils available in the Indian market. The method was validated according to ICH Q2(R1) guidelines for linearity, precision, accuracy, robustness, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantification (LOQ). Heavy metal content was determined using inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), and moisture content was analyzed using Karl Fischer titration.

The developed method showed excellent linearity (R² > 0.999), precision (%RSD < 2%), and recovery (98–102%). Oleic acid was found to be the predominant fatty acid (44.99%), followed by palmitic acid (32.82%), linoleic acid (10.33%), and tocopherol (8.32%). Heavy metal levels were within permissible limits, while moisture content in certain samples exceeded recommended values. The validated method is suitable for routine quality control analysis of edible oils.
