In Silico Identification of Putative Fruit Crop-Derived Antibacterial Peptides Against Aeromonas hydrophila .

ABSTRACT

Aquaculture is a fish-producing subsector of agriculture that has a significant role in India’s economy and livelihood. The major threat to fish production is the outbreak of bacterial infections that creates severe losses every year. Aeromonas hydrophila is an opportunistic invader of human and aquatic animals, ubiquitously present in the aquatic environment. Antibiotics are the common control measure, but their indiscriminate use has resulted in the development of resistance by the pathogen. As an alternative to antibiotics, Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) are used nowadays to tackle antimicrobial resistance. This study aims to identify the putative plant-derived antibacterial peptides as a valid drug candidate against multidrug-resistant bacteria, A. hydrophila, using bioinformatic approaches. Out of 10953 AMP sequences retrieved from Mendeley covering different fruit crops, 764 and 326 sequences were detected with antimicrobial and antibacterial activity, respectively. They were shortlisted to 11 antibacterial peptides (ABPs) based on non-toxic, non-allergenic, non-hemolytic and bioactive stable proteins. The protein-peptide interaction study revealed that all ABPs have positive binding affinity towards the virulent factors of Aeromonas. Hence, the predicted ABPs derived from fruit crops have the bactericidal effect and further wet-lab experiments are required to verify the findings. . . .
