ABSTRACT

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into pharmacy practice and healthcare, offering potential improvements in diagnostic accuracy, workflow efficiency, and drug development. However, its adoption raises ethical, technical, and professional challenges that require careful evaluation.

Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted among 3,000 pharmacy professionals, students, and healthcare researchers in Saudi Arabia. A structured questionnaire comprising 34 items assessed demographic characteristics, knowledge and perceptions of AI, applications in pharmacy practice, ethical and technical challenges, and attitudinal perspectives. Descriptive statistics and inferential analyses, including chi-square tests and logistic regression, were performed.

Results: Most participants perceived AI as accurate or moderately accurate in clinical diagnosis and outcome prediction. Strong support was expressed for using AI as a decision-support tool rather than a replacement for healthcare professionals. Major concerns included data privacy, algorithmic bias, lack of transparency, and over-reliance on automated systems. Ethical safeguards, patient consent, and human oversight were consistently emphasized.

Conclusion: AI is widely viewed as a valuable innovation in pharmacy practice; however, its successful integration depends on addressing ethical, technical, and human factors. Patient-centered design, professional training, and robust governance frameworks are essential for responsible and effective AI adoption in healthcare.
