Introduction: The liver is the most important organ, which plays a pivotal role in regulating various physiological processes in the body. Literature study shows that numerous medicinal plants and their formulations are used for liver disorders in ethno-medicinal practices and in the traditional system of medicine in India.
Aim: The present study aims to evaluate the hepatoprotective and antioxidant property of the whole plant extract of Trichosanthes lobata Roxb. against CCl₄ and D-Galactosamine induced hepatotoxicity in albino rats.
Materials and Methodology: Wistar rats (male and female in equal numbers) were divided into 7 groups consisting of 6 animals per group. The animals were pre-treated twice daily with 100 mg/kg and 200 mg/kg of extract which served as the test group, and Silymarin 100 mg/kg orally which served as the standard, 1 hour before CCl₄ and D-Galactosamine administration. All the animals except the normal group animals received CCl₄ and D-Galactosamine twice daily for a period of 10 and 7 days respectively. Animals were sacrificed to collect samples to analyze levels of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), bilirubin, total protein (TP), superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione (GSH).
Result: Trichosanthes lobata Roxb. statistically reduced increased levels of SGPT, SGOT, ALP, TG, cholesterol and bilirubin in diseased animals. Trichosanthes lobata Roxb. also statistically restored decreased levels of TP, SOD, CAT, and GSH in diseased animals. The present study shows that both low (100 mg/kg) and high (200 mg/kg) doses of Trichosanthes lobata Roxb. exhibit statistically significant hepatoprotective activity in the CCl₄ and D-Galactosamine induced pharmacological animal model.
Conclusion: It was concluded that Trichosanthes lobata Roxb. possesses significant hepatoprotective and antioxidant activity.
